MATCHPLAY (SIMILAR TO RYDER CUP) GOLF TOURNAMENT GENERAL
RULES & CONDITIONS OF PLAY
1. General Conditions of Play
a. A Matchplay championship is played in accordance with the Rules of Golf
approved by the R&A Golf Club of St. Andrews and also the local rules of the
golf club where the championship is being held.
b. All holes have to be putted out unless conceeded by your opponent. All
scorecards must be marked by another competitor in the flight.
c. General diffences between Match Play and Stroke Play
i.) In match play, each hole is a separate competition. The player with
the fewest strokes on an individual hole wins that hole; the player
winning the most holes wins the match. The stroke total for 18 holes
does not matter in match play.
ii.) In match play, conceded putts are legal, in Stroke Play it is illegal. Your
opponent can concede a putt to you at any point, whether it's 6
inches or 60 feet from the hole. Conceded putts should only be
offered, they should never be requested.
iii.) Other than hitting the ball into a Hazard or Out of Bounds (OB), there
are no stroke penalties in Match Play. Any breach of rules can only
result in three (3) outcomes;
a. Replay the shot. Examples;
i. Teeing ouside the tee box.
ii. Hitting before your turn.
b. Loss of hole. Examples;
i. Grounding the club in a hazard.
ii. Hitting the wrong ball.
iii. Playing a second ball without informing your opponent.
iv. The flagstick is still in the hole, and your putt (your ball is
on the green) strikes it.
v. Carrying more than 14 clubs – you will lose all the holes
where the breach has been committed. For example, if you
noticed that your opponent has been carrying more than
14 clubs on the the 11th tee box, he will therefore loses all
the previous 10 holes.
c. Disqualification – loss of match. Examples;
i. Failing to arrive on time on the 2nd tee box.
ii. Deliberately influencing the position or the movement of a
ball.
2. Scoring
a. A win results in 1 point and a draw results in ⅟₂ point.
b. The team which accumulated the most points wins the match.
c. There are 3 points to be won in each flight of 4 players;
i. Individual matches;
Player 1 (Team A) versus Player 1 (Team B) → 1 point
Player 2 (Team A) versus Player 2 (Team B) → 1 point
ii. Best score of Team A versus best score of Team B → 1 point.
In this example Ali and Rahman played for Brunei while David and
Wong played for Singapore. The following are some of the possible
scenarios;
i. Ali beat David - 1 point to Brunei. Rahman beat Wong – 1 point
to Brunei. Partnership best ball Ali and Rahman beat David and
Wong – 1 point to Brunei.
Overal result: Brunei 3 - Singapore 0.
ii. Ali beat David – 1 point to Brunei. Wong beat Rahman – 1 point
to Singapore. Partnership best ball Ali and Rahman beat David
and Wong – 1 point to Brunei.
Overall result: Brunei 2 – Singapore 1.
iii. David beat Ali – 1 point to Singapore. Rahman beat Wong – 1
point to Brunei. Partnership best ball all square - ⅟₂ point each to
Brunei and Singapore.
Overall result: Brunei 1⅟₂ points – Singapore 1⅟₂ points.
d. No Show;
i. No show will be a serious set back to a team.
ii. In the example above, if Wong from Singapore failed to show up,
then Rahman from Brunei automatically wins 1 point for the
individual match.
iii. David will then have to play against both Ali and Rahman for the
Partnership best ball point.
